Tropenmuseum* Amsterdam

With the support of the German National Erasmus+ Agency Jugend für Europa, the youth initiatives "Wilhelmstraße 77" from Berlin and "Trieste Tropen" from Groningen (Netherlands) carried out the project "Reflecting Colonialism". The main goal of the two-week programme was to come to terms with Europe’s colonial heritage. It revolved around the question to what extent the misconceptions, errors, and crimes of the colonial past are subject of a self-critical discussion today. In Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum*, the group explored educational approaches used in contemporary museology in dealing with the wide array of racist mind-sets prevailing today.

* "1 museum, 3 locations | As of October 4, 2023, the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden and the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam merged together under one name: Wereldmuseum. Wereldmuseum Berg en Dal (formerly Afrika Museum) is closed as of November 2023. We believe that the world has no center but is one vast network where everything influences each other. We explore the world around us and try to understand it better through our collection and exhibitions. At all locations of the Wereldmuseum, the focus is on themes that influence our daily lives."
