Profile | About us

Memos emerged from a youth initiative that began operating in Berlin's Kreuzberg district in the late 1990s. To this day, we remain connected to our cooperation partners, which are the DTK-Wasserturm youth centre and the municipal youth office. Memos, as an association, was officially founded in 2007 after we had organised encounters between young people from Germany and Israel with Holocaust survivors, their children and grandchildren, supported by the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future". Inspired by the results of this intergenerational approach, we have set up and published an online archive "Jungsein 33/45" of interviews with contemporary witnesses of the Nazi era.

As enshrined in our association's statutes, Memos e. V. strives to promote humanity and community spirit in local, regional and global contexts. Specifically, we aim to foster democratic values and social participation and, in particular, to empower young people to take responsibility for shaping their social, political and economic environment. Furthermore, we promote international cooperation and global awareness to create humane development opportunities in disadvantaged regions of the world and strive to create spaces for encounter, exchange and conflict resolution. We take a stand against misanthropy, hatred and violence, encourage active engagement with history and promote conflict-sensitive remembrance and commemoration, especially against the backdrop of Nazi crimes.

Gradually, partnerships with actors in the field of youth and remembrance culture and historical learning were established. Outside Berlin, these include the Youth Office of the City of Nuremberg, the Kaufering Memorial Foundation and the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. In addition, we have been working closely with the NGOs Never Again Rwanda and Esperance  in Kigali.

With regard to the strategic orientation of Memos e. V., our commitment is bound by the guidelines of the United Nations, the European Union and the German Federal Government. Specifically, these are:
